Periodically, the New York Times publishes a new entry in their “Room for Debate” series. Each ” Room for Debate” poses a question or topic to a group of experts and each expert is able to write a short opinion piece on that topic. Recently, the Times published this new set of op-eds focused on the question: “Why blame teachers?”
The ‘debaters’ include scholars Diane Ravitch and Pedro Noguera (typically seen as coming from a progressive perspective) and Frederick Hess of the conservative American Enterprise Institute. This wide-ranging discussion is a good overview of the various schools of thought surrounding the role – actual versus expected – of K-12 educators.
